Commander Dave Johnson, Britain's top homicide cop, wants lawmakers to require DNA samples to be taken from all babies born in England, as well as all deceased people, citizens renewing their passports, and migrants new to the country. He wants to do this in order to help solve some 300,000 cases where they have genetic material linked to a crime, but no match in the current database, which is made up of all persons arrested in Britain. That's ARRESTED, not CONVICTED, by the way.
Says Cmdr. Johnson:
“As well as solving crime, it would really make someone think twice about committing crime if they knew their DNA was on a database.
“There is also a compelling case for taking DNA from people when they die, so that we can cleanse the database.”
Right, because the average criminal is known for thinking out their crimes in advance, especially ones of the "crime of convenience" variety, such as muggings, robbery and carjacking, as well as crimes committed while drunk or on drugs. That's worth invading the genetic privacy of every citizen, as well as violating the dead. You already film almost every waking moment of the average Briton's life, why not go ahead and complete the job by forcing millions of innocent people to put their DNA into a government database (which we know is never compromised or used for illicit purposes, of course) to be used for God knows what in the future, because once governments get information such as this, "mission creep" inevitably follows. What happens if the government decides that certain criminal traits are of genetic origin? Will they go ahead and jail people for crimes that they are highly likely to commit in the future, based on their biological makeup? Will this data be sold to someone willing to pay enough money, such as drug companies, insurance companies, or anyone else that thinks it worth the cash, if the government thinks it worth the trade?
It seems to me that the "slippery slope" of freedom loss in England is nearly vertical at this point. One has to wonder if the average person over there will ever wake up to the constant erosion of their liberties and take action, or if it is already too late.
