This story is getting stranger hourly.
Look, a rape accusation is a very serious charge, and it absolutely should be investigated aggressively and completely, but it's becoming increasingly obvious that the case against the Duke lacrosse students just isn't there. Additionally, the accuser apparently has some serious credibility (as well as some unfortunate mental) problems, as shown by her changing her story yet again.
The lesson that I take away from this case is that if I ever get accused of anything, whether I'm innocent or not, I DO NOT talk to the police or the prosecutor without consulting an attorney first. In a perfect world, I'd be the first to try to help in any way I could, but not with the likes of this idiot Michael Nifong running around. In my opinion, the Duke students were not angels by any means, but this case seems to look more and more like a railroad job in order to get Nifong re-elected all the time. For the prosecutor to conspire with the head of the DNA lab to withhold evidence, override police procedure in order to fix a lineup, and make prejudicial, inflammatory statements before the case was even fully investigated is just a complete abuse of his power, and will make me think very hard before volunteering anything in any case in the future, even if I were completely innocent. Who knows how my words would be twisted around? This to me is a classic case of peasants being crushed under the weight of an oppressive government official for reasons that have nothing at all to do with whether the incident happened or not.
For me, the capper is this quote from Nifong:
"One would wonder why one needs an attorney if one was not charged and had not done anything wrong."
Can he really be that stupid? Maybe because it's their Constitutional right, sir? Boy, solving these cases sure would be easier if it wasn't for that pesky document. Maybe we should repeal it, to make the government's job that much easier. This reminds me of the old cop-out argument, "If you have nothing to hide, then why are you afraid to talk to us?"
You're the reason why, Mr. Nifong. Thanks a lot.
