State Senator Carole Migden, D - (I'm a Hypocrite)

Senator Migden, who voted last year for a new law that fines motorists in California for using a cell phone while driving, rear-ended another motorist while, you guessed it, using a cell phone.

Ms. Migden is a Democrat from San Francisco, an area which is known for politicians who feel that the law doesn't apply to them. She's just carrying on a proud tradition, I guess.

One detail from the article caught my eye:

"State Sen. Carole Migden, D-San Francisco, was driving her new state-issued 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV",

which

"she recently swapped for her taxpayer-funded 2005 Cadillac STS".

Why are the citizens of California, which is continually in a budget crisis, giving state legislators cars to drive? Don't they have their own? I can understand reimbursing mileage for driving to official events, but just giving them cars seems a little excessive to me, to say nothing of the types of cars they're given.

Checking cars.com, a 2007 Toyota Highlander hybrid SUV starts retailing at around $32,500, and I'm sure she's not driving a bare-bones model. A 2005 Cadillac STS can be bought today for around $35,000, which means it was probably in the $45,000 range two years ago. Even allowing for fleet discounts, those are some pretty nice rides to tool around in on the public's dime.

I suppose that a legislator who feels that she is exempt from the laws she imposes on the peasants she represents wouldn't see the problem with using a bankrupt state's funds to get herself a car that many of her constituents probably couldn't afford.

It's good to be in charge!!
