Really? I think the family of Carmen Espersen would beg to differ.
The 72-year-old Apple Valley, Minnesota woman was driving down Highway 13 in Eagan, Minnesota on December 23, 2005, running holiday errands and preparing to visit her grandson, who was newly home from Iraq, when she was struck head-on by a man who purposely drove his minivan into her car, in some kind of crazy suicide attempt. The man, Juan Canizal, was an illegal immigrant from Mexico who was living in Eagan. (Eagan is the town I reside in. The "accident" occurred about 2 miles from my front door. This could very easily have been me, or my wife, or one of my friends and neighbors.)
Mr. Canizal pleaded guilty to criminal vehicular homicide, and was sentenced to 57 months in prison on Monday.
"After his prison term, he is likely to be deported to Mexico."
Likely? Likely? How about "That better be 100 percent certainty"?
If Mr. Canizal had not been here illegally, Mrs. Espersen would still be alive today, and her large family would not have been given a horrible Christmas present two years ago.
Did Mr. Canizal know how to drive? Did he have mental instability issues? (Shrugs shoulders) No one knows, as he just cut the line and came here without any controls at all. I had to drive on the same roads as this guy. Yay.
Illegal immigration has consequences. Some of them are quite severe, unfortunately.
