Sam Shuster, an English professor of dermatology, has published a study of Karl Marx's skin health history, and he claims that Marx suffered from a bad case of hidradenitis suppurativa, in which the apocrine sweat glands in the armpits and groin become blocked and inflamed. Shuster believes that the discomfort caused by this disease affected Marx's outlook on life, and consequently influenced his writing:
"'In addition to reducing his ability to work, which contributed to his depressing poverty, hidradenitis greatly reduced his self-esteem,' said Shuster, who published his findings in the British Journal of Dermatology.
'This explains his self-loathing and alienation, a response reflected by the alienation Marx developed in his writing.'"
The article provides a quote from a missive from Marx to Friedrich Engels that seems to back this theory:
"The bourgeoisie will remember my carbuncles until their dying day," Marx told Friedrich Engels in a letter from 1867."
Wow. Over 100 million people were slaughtered in the 20th century by evil dictators influenced by the written rantings of a man with the mother of all skin rashes. What a waste.
