...Are the Monteal, Quebec police officers who gave college student Brendan Jones a $628 ticket for the heinous crime of sitting on a ledge at a park in the downtown area last Saturday, ignoring the dozens of other people who were doing the very same thing at the time.
Why was Mr. Jones singled out for such a big ticket?
He had the audacity to photograph officers rousting a couple of drunks who were present in the park at the same time he was.
"'Then a police officer came by and asked if he had been taking pictures. Once I realized she was attempting to get me to give her my camera, I became confused and told her I would not give it to her,' Jones said.
'I had not committed any crime and had been sitting peacefully, just like many others around me.'
The officer's two partners joined her, and Jones slipped the camera into his pocket. The police then told him it was illegal to sit in a city park when not on a bench and he would have to leave." (Emphasis mine)
The capper? The ledge was designed specifically for people to sit on and enjoy while in the park:
"The purpose of the granite surfaces at Émilie Gamelin Park is to have people sit on them, said Montreal architect Gavin Affleck, a specialist in urban spaces."
But not to sit on them while photographing public safety officers doing their job in public, it seems.
