A polling firm has discovered that the average British subject is now guilty of breaking the law in some fashion at least once a day, however inadvertently.
Well, achieving that level of criminality is kind of easy when a person can be rousted out of their house at 11:45 at night and threatened with arrest and prosecution for "offenses" such as putting a solar-powered garden gnome on one's lawn.
Gordon Mackillop of Treovis, in Cornwall, England, has a former policeman neighbor named John McLean who was apparently offended by the police uniform-wearing ornament, and who subsequently sicced his active duty brethren on Mackillop:
"[The police] served him with a notice under the Protection From Harassment Act 1997 for 'placing a garden gnome with intent to cause harassment to Mr John McLean'"
and
"Mr McLean has told officers that the garden gnome, who comes complete with police dog and solar light and costs £13.99, was in an 'annoying position'."
How very sad to find out that Mr. McLean's sensibilities have been offended by such reckless, felonious behavior. Good for him for being proactive in this matter. We'd hate for him to be subjected to the visual indignities of a flock of plastic pink flamingos, or face the horrifying prospect of seeing a gazing ball on someone else's property.
Whatever does he do on Halloween? Call for the SWAT team?
