Reduced to buying the latest in fashionable body armor

At Miguel Caballero, a high-end clothing store in Mexico City, the entire line of clothing is bulletproof.

This is in response to the wildly increasing criminal gun violence in the city, despite Mexico's near-total ban on firearms and ammunition. Possessing even one unauthorized round is a felony.

"Some people are trying to get their hands on weapons, which are tightly regulated here but widely available on the black market" (Emphasis mine)

A frank admission that restricting access to defensive weapons to the regular citizen only makes them a juicy target for criminals who ignore the law anyway, and which forces those same peasants to take expensive and debatably effective safety measures such as changing their wardrobe to this season's Kevlar offerings.

Ouch. I found an article from this year that claims that one is 34 times more likely to be murdered or assaulted in Mexico than in the United States. It also seems that this sounds like a GREAT reason to build a decent border fence to cut down on the "narcos."
