Why I carry a handgun for protection, Vol. 16

Because I am sometimes required to travel to cities such as Detroit, where the police appear to have simply given up:

"Sheriff Warren Evans said police are so slow to respond to some calls that the crimes never get reported. Prosecutor Kym Worthy was more blunt:

'We don't tell the truth about crime,' she said

...

The main explanation is simple, according to the county's top two law enforcement officials: Detroit police are making fewer arrests, a dereliction so obvious it has led some Detroiters to conclude there's no point in even calling the cops."

Residents and visitors to that particular metropolitan area are on their own, it seems. Fortunately, the state of Michigan has a very generous reciprocity policy for resident holders of handgun carry permits from other states. You would be quite wise to take advantage of it when going there.

Detroit police gave up long ago. I lived in Detroit from 1978-1986 and even then it was useless to call 911.

The only way to get police to your house was to know a cop personally and have his phone number, so you could call him direct.

We set up a neighborhood watch for our street, and both cops involved in the process gave us their work and home phone numbers, and told us to call them first.
