I almost hate to keep picking on England, but they make it so incredibly easy.
Now the land of security cameras on every corner has added speakers to a number of those cameras, enabling the people monitoring the images to berate the public if they perceive that there is wrongdoing going on.
What sort of wrongdoing? Certainly assaults, robberies, and the like get lots of attention and high priority, right?
Nope.
From the article:
"The system allows control room operators who spot any anti-social acts - from dropping litter to late-night brawls - to send out a verbal warning: 'We are watching you'."
and:
"The Mail on Sunday watched as a cyclist riding through a pedestrian area was ordered to stop.
'Would the young man on the bike please get off and walk as he is riding in a pedestrian area,' came the command."
Man, I'm glad they stopped that litter from getting dropped. Someone could have lost an eye or something. Note to self - no nose-picking or wedgie-fixing on a public street in London - I might get scolded.
All kidding aside, I hope everyone else reading this is chilled by the possibility of "overlords" not only monitoring every move you make, but also correcting any perceived wrong behavior loudly and publicly.
Another tick on the list of why I'll never visit England again.
