This columnist finally gets the right call on Tank Johnson of the Chicago Bears, and how sports "heroes" get treatment that is far different than what the peasants could ever hope to receive.
Short version: Coddled football player gets arrested 3 times in 18 months for such lovely things as assaulting a police officer (who declines to pursue the case; think that would happen to you or me?); has police called to his house multiple times for disturbances; is arrested yet again for violating his probation with drugs and unregistered weapons, which is a stupid unconstitutional law in Illinois, but is still the law until it is changed or struck down (this makes me doubly mad at him, as anti-gunners will attempt to make this moron the face of responsible, law-abiding gun owners). Goes out the very next evening to a nighclub where his "bodyguard" is shot and killed. End result - Johnson is placed on home confinement, and is only allowed to leave for practice and home games. In addition, he has to call probation officers up to ten times a day.
Team discipline? He is suspended for one game. Don't spare the rod, guys.
Chicago Bears qualify for Super Bowl. Small problem: Top defensive tackle Tommie Harris is injured. His backup is guess who? Tank Johnson. Judge in Illinois gives Johnson permission to cross state lines to go to Super Bowl, with no restrictions such as checking in with probation officers. Johnson is free to party all week long in Miami. Gives self-serving interviews in which he professes to be a "peaceful"guy, and how he is just misunderstood.
Way to reward him, Judge John L. Moran, Jr. What lesson do you think Johnson will take away from this? That he's untouchable, that's what.
Go Colts.
