As I had thought might be the case while writing the article about this situation last night, the Muslim Target employees' reticence to handle packaged pork products may have a little more to do with control and power than with religion.
This is admittedly secondhand, but my wife listened to KS95 this morning, and a caller who works at Wal-Mart related that apparently the Muslim employees there pull the same stunts when they cashier, but have no problem gobbling up free pepperoni pizza when it's left in the break room. (No, they didn't take the pepperoni off, according to the caller.)
My wife had another interesting take on the situation, as well. How many degrees of separation from the pork (Kevin BACON gets six degrees of separation. Sorry.) are the Muslims willing to have before they're willing to handle something? For example, the subject of reporter Serre's experience wouldn't handle a pizza, even when it was wrapped in plastic as well as a cardboard box. Let's call that two degrees of separation from the pork. But what about the rest of the products in the freezer case? They were in contact with the outside of the box that the cashier wouldn't touch. How can she justify touching those?
What about the rest of the products that came on the same truck, or were stored in the same warehouse? Exactly how much separation will be necessary before the employees will deign to touch those products?
This is what the "diversity" movement has given us.
