Two corporate executives have been fined and sentenced to home confinement for six months after pleading guilty to knowingly hiring illegal aliens.
What did they hire them to do? Build a fence on the border between the U.S. and Mexico to keep out illegal aliens, as well as build fences on government facilities such as military bases. The executives admitted to employing at least 10 illegals, including 3 who the goverment had previously found out about during an audit in 1999, and had ordered the company to fire.
What stood out to me in the article was the following line:
"However, prosecutors were unable to find a previous case in which an employer had been sent to jail for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants."
Well, we still don't have one, although the fines were extremely steep, and the company itself has paid a heavy price because of the negative publicity. Hopefully this will be the start of a new focus on stemming the demand for illegal labor in this country, which will do the most to reduce the supply.
