The numbers quoted from this article should be enough to give even the most fervent illegal-alien apologists pause.
Of the estimated 12 million illegal aliens in this country, over 600,000, or about 5 and a half percent, are "fugitive aliens", people who have been ordered to leave and have not done so. They just up and disappear, only to resurface somewhere else in the country. The officers whose job it is to find these people, some of whom are chronic or violent offenders, are completely overwhelmed. Of course, they aren't being given any help from places like Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as my home area of the Twin Cities, where local law enforcement agencies are expressly forbidden to investigate a suspect's immigration status.
A significant portion of these fugitive aliens were ordered deported after being convicted of crimes. These are the ones that I label "triple criminals": They arrive here illegally, commit crimes, and then refuse to leave once ordered to. Of course, since the government generally gives them 5 arrests for crossing the border illegally before prosecuting them, a lot of these people are guilty of more than 3 crimes before they even get a chance to drive drunk, rob people, or, admittedly more mildly but just as annoying if one lives next door, have "nuisance crimes" such as having 20 people living in one house, staging cockfights, importing khat, or doing whatever it is they used to do in their home countries, even though it's illegal here. These people don't want to "assimilate", as I've argued here before. They wish to bring their way of life to this country, even though it they disliked their former country enough to leave it.
I beg to disagree with the people that maintain that illegal immigration is a "vicimless crime", for the above arguments. We have borders for a reason, let's please enforce them.
