Some Mexican citizens get it

This article shows that at least some Mexicans are getting a little fed up with their compadres who cheat in order to get here:

"Edmundo Bermudez, a 36-year-old from the northern city of Durango, said the plan rewards those who have already entered the United States illegally, while shutting out those who stayed home hoping to gain legal passage."

Another worker had this to say:

"'They are rewarding those who are doing things wrong and abandoning my boys who need work,' he said, adding that there are millions of migrants waiting for U.S. jobs."

Exactly. These men, who want to do the honorable thing and get a legal visa to come work for a while, then return home, are put off by people that just up and cut in front of them, reducing the law-abiding immigrant's chances of a legal job even further. I'd be upset as well.

As I've said in a previous post, Mexico is not a poor country. They have a friendly, hard-working population, and abundant resources, including oil, agriculture, tourism, and many other industries. Their major problem is a thoroughly corrupt and incompetent government that is prejudicial to its own citizens, forcing them to leave, both legally and illegally, in order to find a chance to improve themselves. Until this situation changes, no amount of immigration "reform" is going to alleviate the situation there. The Mexican government is under no pressure to change, as disgruntled residents simply vamoose, and then send money back home to boot, helping to prop up the GNP. The citizens of Mexico need to stay there and put significant pressure on their government, or the problem will merely spread to our country.

Of course, the article also quotes a man who still doesn't get it:

"'They shouldn't punish people who are just trying to get ahead,' he said."

Low-level drug dealers and petty thieves are also "just trying to get ahead", but we don't tolerate them, because what they do are crimes. The same standard should apply here.
