At least they had the option, unlike lots of others

A group of Somali pirates received quite the surprise today when they attempted to hijack a North Korean cargo ship outside of Mogadishu and the crew fought back, injuring several of the buccaneers, with no casualties to the crew.

"'The crew members have taken control of the ship after defeating the eight men who hijacked it last night,' said Dahir Hassan, an elder in the Somali port of Haradere, explaining that the crew had managed to reach their weapons." (emphasis mine)

It sure is nice when people are able to access firearms for their personal protection, especially in areas where help is nonexistent, or quite some time in coming.

I'm sure some anti-gunners will shriek, "Why didn't they have some sort of guards to handle this stuff, instead of trying to be "vigilantes"?

"'The ship was hijacked by security men who were on board and were supposed to be protecting it'"

Oops. I think I'd rather fend for myself than hire some unknown group to protect me.

Situations like this attempted hijacking and this similar situation right off the Florida coast are something the U.S. Coast Guard should think about while puzzling over the reason why boat owners wish to carry firearms on board their private vessels.
