Another political career seems to have been shipwrecked upon the rocks of the Island of Hypocrisy.
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who has already gotten the reputation of someone who will skate the fine edge of legality whenever it's seemingly convenient for him to do so, as well as his long record of suing everyone in sight for everything under the sun when he was the state's Attorney General, is this very hour going to have a press conference in which he will apparently announce that he is indeed a customer of an exclusive prostitution service located in Washington, D.C. This is the very same man who publicly patted himself heartily on the back for busting similar rings in New York State, as the New York Times is reminding everyone today:
"'This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,' Mr. Spitzer said at the time. 'It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.'"
I guess he somehow got swollen with success, and decided to sample the goods himself. Which is fine, just fine, as long as he gets the same treatment that the johns in the cases he prosecuted got.
The Times article reminds us that when he campaigned for the job of governor, he "pledged to bring ethics reform and end the often seamy ways of Albany".
I don't think he's going to quite make that goal anytime soon.
UPDATE: Taking the lead from Bill Clinton, Governor Spitzer has apologized to the public as well as to his family, but conveniently left out explaining exactly what he's apologizing for. Causing unspecified "pain in his marriage" a la Slick Willie, I suppose.
A resignation watch is already in effect.

"Swollen with success" has to go down as one of the greatest lines in blog history!
