A 24-year-old man in Texas, Mark Robinson, with a spotless criminal and traffic record was arrested, booked and strip-searched, and forced to spend 3 hours in jail, all for the serious crime of not signaling for a turn while driving down a street in the town of Melissa.
Of course, there's more to the story. The man was apparently really locked up for having the temerity to not bow and scrape enough for the ticketing officer:
"But he does admit to challenging the officer's questions during the stop."
Ah, the old "You will not question my authorita one iota or else" justification.
"'People talking about using drugs and shooting heroin. They asked me what I was in there for and I said a turn signal violation,' said Robinson."
Not exactly Public Enemy No. 1, is he?
As expected, the local police chief, Duane Smith, is defending his officer's actions, and asserting that the cop had every right to make the arrest. Curiously, though, the chief is stating publicly that "he will review department policy and may make changes."
Because that's what I always do when someone under my authority is perfectly justified in doing something - immediately review and change the policy.
