The $5,000 cloak of traffic invincibility

The California Highway Patrol, along with a foundation associated with it, has been shamed into discontinuing its practice of handing out license plate frames to donors who make a $5,000 donation to the charity, because of the "perception" that frame-equipped drivers were getting quite a break on traffic tickets.

Now why would the drivers think that they have something special coming to them?

"Donors who gave $5,000 received the license plate frame and a brass identification card with a small star similar to a CHP officer's badge.

The foundation says the items aren't designed to buy immunity from traffic tickets"

Then why do the donors get an ID card? Because it looks shiny and pretty in their wallet? Of course not. It sure sounds like just the thing that could be conveniently handed over with one's license in order to "grease the skids" a little bit, doesn't it? Look, the Mercedes drivers sure figured it out:

"But an online Mercedes-Benz chat board called the frame 'the ultimate speeding ticket solution in California.'"

A charity for fallen officers is a wonderful thing. One shouldn't receive indulgences for contributing to it, however.

"It also does background checks on applicants and kicks out donors who seek special treatment."

No, just the stupid ones who don't understand how the game is played, and who openly admit to wishing to buy off cops.

How sad....now those who want to violate traffic laws at will will have to become volunteer firemen! :^)
