A snapshot of life

November 5, 2008
Circle K convenience store in Phoenix, Arizona
6:30 p.m.

A young woman who clearly has already lived a rough life is loudly complaining about the lack of availability of newspapers to purchase, as she has heard from someone that the front page announcing Obama's victory will likely be a valuable collector's item someday. She first asks if the store even sells papers, which leads me to believe that she has never attempted to purchase one before now.

She gushes about how happy she is about the election's outcome while purchasing a four-pack of Mickey's Malt Liquor, a cheap beverage most often consumed by winos. It clearly won't be the first alcohol that she has had this day.

How is she going to feel, and what is she and others like her going to do, when their promised riches don't appear?

What strikes me is how Barack Obama has managed to live 20 years of his life around this kind of person (sorry, they're plentiful in the South Side), and has yet to figure out that what we're doing to help these people just isn't working.

On another note, if you cut corn subsidies, you'd deal a death blow to many makers of malt liquor. Look at the ingredients; corn syrup is generally #1 for those intestine-cleaners.
