Most likely the correct outcome

Fox Sports is reporting that Dallas police officer Robert Powell, who so thoroughly abused his authority and professional discretion when he prevented NFL running back Ryan Moats from being with his dying mother-in-law because Moats ran a red light while trying to get to her hospital in time to say good-bye, has done the honorable thing and resigned from the department.

To his credit, Powell released what appears to be a genuinely heartfelt statement:

"I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward,"... "I still hope to speak with the Moats family to personally express my deep regret, sympathy, and to apologize for my poor judgment and unprofessional conduct"

We second Powell's request that other officers learn from this incident and find ways to better enforce the law without becoming jack-booted about it. In return, we pledge to attempt to more fully understand and appreciate the hard work that the vast majority of good, service-oriented officers do on our behalf, and will try to find additional ways to help them in their efforts to make our society a safer, more pleasant place.
