So that if I happen to be minding my own business in a busy Denny's restaurant in Albuquerque, New Mexico at 9:30 on a Saturday morning, and six armed individuals happen to enter and shoot up the place in a robbery attempt, killing a teenage female employee in the process, I will be able to at least try to defend that server, along with myself and the rest of the law-abiding patrons who were only there to enjoy a weekend breakfast, from those violent, sociopathic thugs.
This horrifying incident once again starkly illustrates the fact that violent crime can happen to innocent victims anywhere at anytime, regardless of the vigorous denials of reality from the likes of Sarah Brady, the Violence Policy Center and their ilk. Should something like this (God forbid) ever happen to you, that handgun you left locked in your safe or lying on your bedside table isn't going to do you much good from afar, is it?
Carry responsibly and safely, and carry everywhere you legally can.

Arizona has just taken a major step towards dismantling race and gender preferences and discrimination in state and local government. Yesterday, the state Senate voted to place an initiative on the 2010 general election ballot barring discrimination against – or preferential treatment for – any individual on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin. The Arizona House approved identical legislation last week.
Senator Russell Pearce, sponsor of the Senate version of the measure noted: "Affirmative Action and other forms of race and gender based preferences have created an uneven playing field for too long in
Arizona. Now our voters will have a chance to put an end to this form of government discrimination once and for all."
Thanks for the series "Why I carry..." I do carry most of the time, and usually I think... "lightning will never strike today." Then I am reminded by news outlets and blog posts like yours that in the "real world" lightning (or armed thuggery) does indeed strike. We are not right wing extremists because we feel a duty to carry. Thanks again for the calm and common sense way in which you discuss this issue. Of course there is no guarantee that being armed will actually protect you or anyone else, anymore than there is a guarantee that wearing a seatbelt will always save your life in a car accident. But, like wearing a seatbelt, it is a simple and prudent thing to do.
