Democratic State Senator Sheila Kuehl, a lesbian former actress who played something called a "Zelda" on a 1960's television show, has sponsored legislation that would remove the terms "mom" and "dad" from textbooks in California, as they are stereotypes of what a family should be. This bill would also remove all gender-specific titles from all school activities, so no prom king or queen either.
Look, gays and lesbians have had a rough time of it, and I don't think they should be discriminated against in school or in the workplace. But the solution to the problem is not to eliminate all gender identification from our society. First of all, it just won't happen, and secondly, legislation such as this will just harden anti-gay people's feelings even further.
I'm glad California doesn't have any serious problems, so they have the time to fool around with this silly stuff.
