A nurse has filed a federal lawsuit against DeKalb County, Georgia, because the police department there gave her a ticket for having a sticker on her car bumper that stated, "I'm tired of all the BUSH**" (unclear whether the whole word was on the sticker, not that it really matters). The ticket was dismissed by a judge, who stated that the law against lewd bumper stickers was ruled unconsitutional in 1990! (Way to keep current on the laws, Mr. Police Officer.)
I'm not one for frivolous lawsuits, but in this case I think the nurse has a point. I don't like or agree with her bumper sticker, but the next person to get a ticket could be you or I. The First Amendment is specifically for the protection of unpopular speech. This sticker is not obscene or sexually explicit, nor is it inflammatory or incites violence (it isn't really funny, either, but that's a personal opinion). The officer in question has no business making such an arbitrary determination, especially with something as mild as this. A free people must be permitted to express their opinion, even in such a ham-handed and unfunny way.
