Sigh - More on England and how not to deal with crime

Those wacky Brits, who deny their law-abiding citizens any means of self-defense, have now disclosed that criminals released early from jail while being electronically monitored have committed more than 1,000 violent offenses, including "one murder, four manslaughters, 56 woundings and more than 700 assaults over the past six years since home detention curfew was introduced in 1999."

The private companies running the monitoring program don't think that anything's wrong. Says "Tom Riall, chief executive of Serco Home Affairs: "I am delighted the PAC has recognised the value of electronic monitoring. The latest contracts with the Home Office delivered a 40% cost saving to the taxpayer through new technology and better service design.""

That's just great, Tom. I'm sure the average citizens in England enjoy saving that 40%, only to have it stolen from them, along with a knock in the head, from the violent felons being turned loose in their community. Keep up the good work, you cheeky bugger!
