Confirmation

It's always gratifying to find out from people in the know that your theories about a given subject are essentially correct.

While on my vacation, I had the opportunity to chat extensively with a lovely older couple from Manchester, England, Frank and Joyce. We discussed the rising violent crime rate in England, and they confirmed my view that gangs of feral youth there are now ruling the streets. They informed me that roving mobs of "yobs", as they call them, have so totally taken over that they are now afraid to leave their home in the evening, something that had never happened to them previously.

Frank and Joyce also report that in their opinion the police in England are a joke, as they think that the cops are a totally ineffective group that cares more about coddling criminals than about protecting the law-abiding public.

When I informed the two about the sweeping tide of "shall issue" handgun carry permit legislation happening in the U.S., as well as the proliferation of "castle doctrine" laws, which allow one to defend their home without fear of prosecution, they were very supportive, and more than a little envious. They reminded me of such cases as Tony Martin, the British farmer who received a life sentence for shooting a burglar ransacking his home, and Patrick Walsh, the homeowner who is now in jail after defending himself from an intruder in his own bedroom.

When I asked the two for permission to write about our conversations on this site, they readily agreed, and asked me to convey the following sentiment:

"You'd better fight like hell for your freedoms, because once they're gone, you won't get them back, and your country will end up like ours is today."

Powerful words, and ones that we had better take to heart.
